The Springvale Road over Piney Run Bridge Replacement project (years away due to lack of funding - AGAIN, this is years away due to lack of funding) will replace the weight-restricted (15 tons) one-lane Springvale Road (Route 674) bridge over Piney Run with a two-lane bridge. The bridge was built in 1965 and rehabilitated in 2000; however, it now is in poor condition and must be replaced.  Two options are being considered for the project:  -Widening the bridge to two lanes with two four-foot-wide shoulders. -Widening the bridge to two lanes separated by raised/splitter island medians with two two-foot-wide shoulders, which are intended to work as a traffic calming measure.  - The bridge is being designed with two lanes because it averages about 4,700 vehicles a day. To be considered for a single-lane replacement, the bridge should carry less than 400 vehicles per day. - In addition, the opening beneath the proposed bridge will also be increased to better withstand flooding. Because the approach roadway is lower than the bridge, flooding issues will not be completely eliminated.
-The project is being financed with state funds and estimated to cost between $4 million to $5 million. Estimated project costs and the project schedule will continue to be developed as the proposed improvements and preliminary design are refined. This project will be coordinated with the construction on Route 7 and the future bridge replacement on Walker Road. To view the presentation given in October and additional information about the project, please visit the project webpage at  Residents are also encouraged to email VDOT with questions and comments at [Exp. Date:TBD]
