Why should your children memorize prayers and lists?
The prayers and lists found below are a small part of the beautiful treasury of traditional prayers and devotions of our Catholic Faith. They help provide us with a glimpse into the foundations of our Faith and a base from which our children can learn how to live their Faith. Our hope is that as children practice and study their Faith in the elementary years, they will be well prepared to share their love for Jesus and the Church he established when they reach the age of Confirmation.
Each CCD class begins with a decade of the Rosary in the church (which the children lead) and ends with a prayer in the classroom or church.
Parents, please pray regularly at home with your children and help them to learn these prayers and basic Catholic catechism lists.
The list below provides a suggested breakdown by grade level. A booklet containing this information is currently being prepared and will be given to all children in the religious education program.

PRAYERS
- Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. - Our Father (The Lord's Prayer)
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. - Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. - Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. - Guardian Angel Prayer
O Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, to guide. Amen. - Grace Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive, from your bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen. - Grace After Meals
We give you thanks, almighty God, for these and all your gifts which we have received through Christ our Lord. Amen. - Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You and I detest all my sins because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. - Morning Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and suffering of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. - Act of Faith
O my God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; I believe that Your Divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths that the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because You have revealed them who can neither deceive nor be deceived. - Act of Hope
O my God, relying on Your infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. - Act of Love
O my God, I love You above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all those whom I have injured. - Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin, Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.
- Hail Mary...
V. And the Word was made flesh. R. And dwelt among us.
- Hail Mary...
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be mad worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
- Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother: to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. - Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven)
(Prayer at Eastertime instead of Angelus) - Queen of heaven, rejoice, Alleluia.
- For He whom you did deserve to bear, Alleluia!
- Has risen as He said, Alleluia! Pray for us to God, Alleluia!
V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia!
R. Because Our Lord is truly risen, Alleluia!
- Let us pray. O God, it was by the Resurrection of Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, that you brought joy to the world. Grant that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may attain the joys of eternal life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
- Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
Response: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer to St. Michael
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the Heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your Peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light, and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive--It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
